Baviaanskloof Route

Geographically speaking, the Baviaanskloof (dutch for valley of baboons) is the valley in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa that runs east to west between the Baviaanskloof Mountains to the north and the Kouga Mountains to the south. In terms of protection, it is known as the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve, a wilderness area that encompasses large expanses of territory in addition to the valley’s eastern half. It has been shortlisted for World Heritage Site classification due to the incredible biodiversity it contains. Study up on the Mega Reserve. Others may simply view it as an amazing, picturesque journey filled with stark contrasts, spanning from the fertile valley of the Gamtoos River through the harsh poorts (gaps), passes, and mountains to the plains nearing Willowmore.

Visitors will be greeted to mountain vistas known as the “Skyscapers” of the Baviaanskloof when they enter the area over the Nuwekloof Pass. Towering cliffs on both sides of the road, which winds along the riverbed, give one a preview of what is to come. The “Geraas Krans” (Noisy Cliff) and the “Baviaanskloof Sleutel” (Baviaanskloof Key) are landmarks you’ll pass along the journey. The latter is a boulder that hangs over the road and has a crack running straight through it from top to bottom. If it were to fall, it would “lock” the road and prohibit access to the Baviaanskloof. The “Key” marks the beginning of the road’s slow entry into the Baviaanskloof farming region, sometimes known as the Baviaanskloof . This region is renowned for its hospitality and a range of guest accommodations, from luxurious lodging to tree houses and camp sites. The Baviaanskloof offers lodging as well as a wide variety of 4×4 routes, hiking trails, and cultural and natural tourism attractions such San rock art, spectaucular rock formations, artesian fountains, wild fig woods, and breathtaking mountain views.
