Heidelberg

Description

Heidelberg is a town in the Western Cape, South Africa. It is located near South Africa’s south coast, on the N2 highway, 274 km east of Cape Town. Heidelberg is just east of the Overberg region, and some consider it the beginning of the Garden Route. Heidelberg is part of the Hessequa Local Municipality. Fourie House on Fourie Street is the oldest house in Heidelberg. Set on the banks of the Duiwenhoks River, with the soaring Langeberg peaks forming a dramatic backdrop, Heidelberg is a nature lover’s paradise and offers a peaceful and scenic atmosphere, particularly as the area remains largely unexplored and unexploited. The Duiwenhoks River meanders its way from the town down to the coast, via the remote little hamlet of Vermaaklikheid, where it then merges with the Indian Ocean. The Duiwenhoks Estuary is one of the last remaining unspoiled estuaries in the country and a conservancy preserves its unique character.
